WHY ART?
Why art? Because Art is life and Art is beauty. So we try to put in beauty
into the lives of people by empowering them through skill acquisition.
Art is one aspect through which Nigeria has contributed meaningfully to
world civilization. We have had a rich traditional past and our heritage
is of great renown through the various artistic traditions that exist
in various parts of the country. There is no one community in Nigeria
that does not practice one form of craft or the other. From carvings to
pottery, painting, metal work, beadwork, weaving of fabrics and baskets,
the list is endless. What we intend to do in WYART is to reawaken the
consciousness in people in order that they attach greater importance to
this aspect of human endeavour for its utilitarian, aesthetic and economic
value. Art brings money, and once you enhance your financial status then
you can make plans for the future. In some other developing countries,
the Arts and Crafts are intricately woven into the tourist industry such
that huge revenue is derived from the work of craftsmen and women.
Today, art is not being taught in many schools as it should. In some cases,
there is an absence of art in the curriculum. A child’s development has
to be holistic. Creativity in effect affects whatever profession the child
chooses to do later on in life. Excluding art from the curriculum is removing
a large chunk of a child’s life and development. A child’s first attempt
to write is drawing. Children doodle; identify shapes and colour and not
numbers and alphabets in their formative years. In today’s world, we realize
that children are engaged with too much to do from very early age. A child
of two is given homework to do – to write figures he barely understands.
The routine of a child is so structured that he/she goes from school to
lesson everyday. During the holiday, it is lesson all over again until
school resumes- hardly any break.
Many of our technical colleges have collapsed. We all desire to have
our children do white-collar jobs. Interestingly, doctors, lawyers and
engineers are fast becoming painters, sculptors and graphic designers,
surviving mainly through thier productions as artists.
We do not intend to make everyone an artist by profession. Our aim is
to provide an avenue through which you can exercise and hone your creative
faucet. We all make artistic judgment everyday. From the way we dress,
select our clothing, furnishing, etc. You can derive joy from creating
your own furnishing, jewelry, etc.
The WYART mission is to see Art being taught in every home and school,
to engage children from very early in artistic activity, to make art an
option in the choice of a career and to bring awareness to the general
populace about the benefits of Art to society.

The
WYART initiative was borne out of her early life experience. Her mother,
Princess Elizabeth Olowu is an artist and as a child she grew up learning
a lot from her. She was always engaged in one activity or the other. She
was also involved in art training and as a teacher, she not only taught
her students while in school but was involved in several

WYART
realizes that if you train a woman, you train a whole nation. When a woman
acquires a skill, she is very likely to pass it on to her children. So,
in this way the whole family is empowered. As an art for empowerment programme,
we intend to transform the lives of women because a good number of them
are unemployed and are idle. |
